I play the piano well enough to amuse myself, and the guitar, well…, enough to amuse others. The painting began simply enough with the idea of “composing” an “arrangement” of hands playing the keyboard and guitar, and it evolved from there. I like working with my hands and it seemed natural to include them to create a sense of movement. As the presentation of a rose after a performance is a tribute, the yard flowers our daughter would present us with when she was little is my favorite tribute. The doily resides on the piano as a memento from my wife’s grandmother. I used it to add a rich texture and define the top surface and front edge of the piano. I’d placed my glasses on the cover of a book I was reading, which had a photograph of Andrew Wyeth on it, and happened to notice them framing the eyes. I immediately knew I wanted to include a similar sense of the image. This is as close as I’ve come to a self-portrait. It’s fun to let your mind be open to those serendipitous moments. The wine glass is a combination of wanting to include the vibrancy of a transparent material, and wanting an element behind the guitar head to emphasize a sense of visual depth. By the time these elements had been included, the painting had developed beyond the original concept of being presented as a vignette, and I decided to add a stage curtain background for additional visual depth and a sense of place. It also provided a place for the hands to come from.
